Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by most of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to learn everything he could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental comments from other people kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
He started competing intently after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an undying passion for poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his success. He knows he makes errors every single game of poker and always strives to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
