Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching turning one. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the adverse comments from others destroy his dream of being one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a normal basis.
