Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn everything he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental feedback from others annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning experience and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an undying passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a regular basis.
